CARE has been doing relief and development work in the West Bank and Gaza since the creation of Israel in 1948 and we now work with around 1.5 million people across both the West Bank and Gaza.
Our work has evolved from providing aid directly to people on the ground to strengthening democracy by working closely with local government and community-based organisations.
CARE in action:
Improving health, water and sanitation
Our work is focused on providing medicine and medical equipment to hospitals and clinics, as well on getting clean water and sanitation services to people in rural villages. While we do set up clean wells and cisterns in areas where water shortages are common, we also help communities to manage their water supply in order to ensure they have clean, safe water in the long-term.
Strengthening governance and social inclusion
We work with local organisations to increase the participation of women and marginalised groups in decision-making at the household, local and national levels.
We aim to preserve, strengthen and sustain the role of local organisations in public decision-making, to build contacts between citizens and all levels of government, and to build up the skills local organisations use to hold the government to account.
