CARE in the Balkans

CARE International has two offices in the Balkans, one in the north-west and one in Kosovo. We have worked in the North West of the region since 1994 and in Kosovo since 1997.

In the Balkans we:
  • help businesses by giving them support, such as economic advice
  • foster dialogue between different ethnic groups, for example by strengthening networks between organisations from different communities
  • raise awareness of human trafficking

We have established a strong reputation for supporting individuals and communities in need - regardless of ethnic background, religious affiliation or national origin.

CARE in action:

Conflict resolution
Conflict has led to high levels of poverty and unemployment in the Balkans. We are working to increase economic opportunities by supporting the establishment and growth of small and medium-sized businesses. Another major focus of our work is promoting peace and democracy in the region. We work with forward-thinking local organisations and student associations to help them influence decision-makers to become a positive force for change.

Human Trafficking
By building capacity of local organisations and networks engaged in anti-trafficking CARE assists governments to suppress trafficking in the region and help victims to integrate into society. We focus our work in boarder communities where women are most vulnerable. We aim to raise awareness on trafficking issues through information campaigns and workshops.
