Drug Users at Risk to HIV: Documenting our Experience 2000 - 2004
This document outlines CARE Bangladesh’s five years of experience in working with drug users to prevent HIV, gained through their DFID funded HIV Programme.
There is a rising trend of HIV prevalence among injecting drug users in Bangladesh and in one area of Dhaka city, the reported rate of HIV prevalence is 8.9%, indicating the start of a concentrated epidemic among this group. To contain the spread of the disease the project used a harm reduction approach, including services such as peer education, abscess and STD treatment, condom distribution and needle-syringe exchange. The document also describes the challenges faced during the implementation of the project and the lessons learned. |
